A homecoming capacity crowd at Edwardsburg High School went home happy Friday as the Eddies swept Berrien Springs in a Wolverine Conference West Division basketball doubleheader.

In the boys game, Edwardsburg beat Berrien Springs, 61-47, while in the girls game, the Eddies turned back the Shamrocks, 53-41.

Leading Edwardsburg in the boys game were Isaac Vite and Dante Razzano. Vite scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers, grabbed eight rebounds and had six steals, while Razzano contributed 20 points and nine rebounds.

“They really played well,” said Edwardsburg boys basketball coach Steve Wright about the duo. “They stepped up and hit some big shots for us. We had other guys step in other areas as well. It was a good team effort.”

The Eddies took control of the game midway through the second quarter into the third. A 27-4 run during that stretch gave Edwardsburg a commanding 40-18 lead with 3:13 left in the third quarter.

“We didn’t shoot particularly well in the first quarter, but we got them to fall later and we got a few stops,” Wright said. “We created some turnovers and that helped us get some easy buckets.”

Edwardsburg shot 59-percent (17-of-29) from the field over the final three quarters.

T.J. Jones scored 14 points off the bench to lead Berrien Springs.

In the girls game, Katelynn Rogers and Savannah Dixon each scored 20 points to lead Edwardsburg. That point total is a career-high for Rogers, who also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Eddies took the lead for good at 19-18 after getting a basket from Noelle Kraus with 1:40 left in the second quarter. That was the start of a 12-0 run by the Eddies, which gave the hosts a 29-18 lead with 5:49 left in the third quarter. Rogers scored six points during that stretch.

“We were able to get the ball inside a little bit better,” said Edwardsburg girls basketball coach Nicole Cartwright. “We’ve got some good shooters on the team and we were able to work the ball around and get better shots. In the first half, we were kind of forcing some things.”

Berrien Springs cut Edwardsburg’s lead to 42-38 with 5:38 remaining, but couldn’t get any closer. Rogers made 2-of-3 free throws to extend the Eddies’ lead back up to six.

It’s the fourth straight win for Edwardsburg, which avenged a 52-45 loss to Berrien Springs earlier in the year.

“We’re a really young team,” Cartwright said. “Early in the season we had some close games and battled hard. We’re jelling now as a team.”
