Buchanan’s ‘Thrill on Hill’ attracts thousands

City officials are reporting great attendance at the Thrill on the Hill event last weekend in Buchanan.

Bill Marx, city manager, said organizers sold 2,129 bracelets that allowed people unlimited slides down the Front Street hill. That number includes combined sales during the event, which took place Friday and Saturday.

“What we saw at registration there were probably another two people for every bracelet that was sold, so I’d say we had several thousand people on site or go through in the two days of operation,” Marx said. “For a community that has a population of 4,500 people, selling 2,100 plus wrist bands is a pretty good accomplishment.”

The speed of the hill was decreased Saturday due to sunlight, but Marx said Friday’s runs — both the family and midnight adult runs — were fast and well attended.

“It was very successful Friday, especially the midnight run, which was a huge success,” said Marx.

Around 300 bracelets were sold for the midnight run alone.

“We had a lot of college kids come out and the younger adults came out too for a really good party,” Marx said.

This was the city’s fourth Thrill on the Hill event.

Marx said attendance numbers were either very close or exceeded attendance seen in previous years.

“We are looking forward to our fifth anniversary and I am very pleased because I think we’ve attracted some larger supporting sponsors for next year,” he said.

Organizers are already thinking about ways to improve the event for next year.

Marx said they plan to expand the “little thrill” children’s hill, while adding special touches like colored snow and additional signage.

“We achieved the goal of the event, which was to create a friendly and fun event for the community, our friends and visitors,” he said. “We accomplished that so I am very happy.”
