Dowagiac sophomore Taylor Hulett has gone on the offensive for the Chieftain girls basketball team of late.

Last week in games against Edwardsburg and Coloma, Hulett scores 25 points, including a game-high 14 in Dowagiac’s win over Coloma.

Hulett was not much of a factor scoring earlier this season for the 3-10 Chieftains.

But with the encouragement of her father Tim Hulett and Dowagiac coach Floyd Foston, Hulett has been looking to take the ball to the basket more.

Hulett also credits the work she and her teammates have been putting in to improve.

“I think we are practicing harder and it makes us all get better,” she said. “I know my dad pushes me and coach pushes me to look to score more. This year we are clicking more as a team and we are coming together as a family.”

Foston said that the team has been working on catching, faking and dribble drives.

“She did that a couple of times tonight,” he said. “She had 11 points last night and double digits tonight. We need that scoring. If we can get eight or 10 points from three people we will be okay.

“I have been telling her to read and react to what the defense is giving you. If nobody is in front of you go to the basket. I have been working with her a lot on her shot because she has a lot of left-hand interference. We been working on keeping her hand down on her shot and getting on balance.”

The Chieftains are back in action Wednesday as they travel to Bridgman for a non-league game.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
