Dowagiac cruises to 77-59 win over Comets

When the Dowagiac boys basketball team turns it on it is something to see.

The Chieftains poured in 27 first quarter points and scored 21 points in the third quarter on their way to a 77-59 Wolverine Conference West Division win over visiting Coloma Friday night.

The outcome of the game was never in doubt following the first eight minutes when the Chieftains opened up a 27-10 lead.

Dowagiac (10-1, 5-1 West) led by just 12 (39-27) at halftime, but outscored the Comets (4-10, 1-5 West) 21-15 in the third quarter and put it on cruise control the rest of the way.

Dowagiac led 60-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

Brandon Winchester-Jones pumped in 23 points for the Chieftains, who also got nine points from both Harry Reed and Bryce Dodd.

Jason Walters, the Comets’ 6-foot-7 center, led all scorers with 38 points. Auston Rushing finished with 13.
