The Hartline twins silenced the Buchanan fans Friday as the Brandywine girls basketball team edged the Bucks, 62-59, in B.C.S. Athletic Conference West Division action.

Makenna Hartline and Michaela Hartline each scored 22 points in front of a capacity crowd at Buchanan High School.

Makenna Hartline’s two free throws gave the Bobcats the lead for good at 57-55 with 47 seconds remaining. A steal and lay-up from Michaela Hartline extended the visitors lead to 59-55 with 38 seconds left. Brandywine’s final point points came on a three-point play from Makenna Hartline, which gave the Bobcats a 62-57 lead with 14 ticks left on the clock.

“I’m scare that next year that Mike Nate, the football coach, might want them,” said Brandywine High School girls basketball coach Josh Hood, whose team improved to 6-0 in the division and 12-1 overall. “They’re just so athletic and strong. They just did a phenomenal job tonight.”

Buchanan, which trailed by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, took its lone lead of the game at 55-53 when Jade Mosier connected on a 3-pointer with 1:53 left in the game.

Brandywine tied the game 16 seconds later after getting a basket from Brooke Smith.

Smith was battling the flu, while top reserve Alyssa Bolen didn’t play because of the flu.

“It’s been a stressful day to say the least,” Hood said.

Mosier scored 20 points and Brooke Wesner added 18 for the Bucks, who fell to 3-2 in the division and 11-2. Buchanan fell to Brandywine, 66-40, earlier in the year.

“I give a lot of credit to Buchanan,” Hood said. “They’re having a heck of a year. They hit some huge shots tonight.”

In the boys basketball game, Buchanan led from start to finish and beat Brandywine, 58-42.

An 11-1 Bucks’ run to start the second half gave Buchanan a 42-25 lead and the Bobcats never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

“Buchanan’s pressure got us running up and down,” said Brandywine boys basketball coach Nathan Knapp.

Brandywine shot only 35-percent (15-of-43) from the field, while Buchanan connected on 54-percent (22-of-41) of its shots.

“Even when we did get into a rhythm (on offense) we gave up easy buckets,” Knapp said. “We had mental lapses on defense and we gave up a lot of offensive rebounds.”

Tyler Flynn scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Bucks, who outrebounded the Bobcats, 28-18.

Zachary Schmidt scored eight points to lead Brandywine.

“We really didn’t push each other all week at practice,” Knapp said. “We were just kind of going through the motions. It’s kind of my fault as coach not getting on them enough.”
