Dowagiac held off a late challenge from visiting Coloma to earn its third victory of the season Friday night.

The Chieftains led just 34-30 with 2:21 to play in the Wolverine West Division contest, but outscored the Comets 10-7 down to stretch to pull out a 44-37 victory.

The improved Dowagiac’s record to 3-10 overall and 2-5 in the West Division. Coloma falls to 1-13 and 0-7 West.

The Chieftains led much of the game, taking a 9-7 advantage into the second quarter.

Coloma outscored Dowagiac 8-5 in the second to lead 15-14 at the half.

Dowagiac used a 6-1 run to start the third quarter to open up a 21-15 lead and led 26-22 heading into the final eight minutes of the contest.

After Riley Daly gave the Chieftains a 34-30 lead with 2:21 to play, Taylor Hulett banked home a 3-pointer to extent Dowagiac’s advantage to 37-30.

Dowagiac made enough free throws down the stretch to hold the Comets at bay.

Hulett finished with a game-high 14 points for the Chieftains, who also got 11 points from Jenesis Green.

Kayla Yore tied for game-high honors as she scored 14 points for Coloma.
