Tori Smith crowned Miss Dowagiac 2015

After taking a brief trip around the world with her 11 fellow contestants and the hundreds sitting in the seats below her, Tori Smith returned to the Grand Old City — where the crown, sash and cape awaited.

The Dowagiac Union High senior was crowned 2015 Miss Dowagiac Saturday night, during the 76th annual pageant inside the middle school’s performing arts center. In addition to the coveted title, Smith will receive a $3,000 scholarship for the college of her choice.

The 18-year-old student is the daughter of David and Shelly Smith. She is the vice president of student senate at school, and plans to study business management at Western Michigan University after graduation.

Reciving first runner-up was 18-year-old Abigail Brizendine, who will receive a $1,350 scholarship. The Dowagiac Union High School student is the daughter of Elvie and Jean Brizendine, and is involved with National Honor Society, choir and tennis. She also plans on studying business at Western.

Winning second runner-up was 17-year-old Riley Saylor, who will receive a $1,200 college scholarship. The daughter of John and Lisa Saylor, she is a part of the high school choir. She plans on going to school to study dental hygiene, with the goal of becoming an orthodontist.

Selected by her peers as Miss Congeniality was 17-year-old Sabrina Ruiz, who will receive $250 worth of scholarship money. The daughter of Lola and Leo Ruiz, she is involved with softball and Wahoo yearbook at Dowagiac Union High School. She plans on attending college with the goal of earning a doctorate in clinical psychology.

Ruiz also received the communications award for her platform on women and painting, receiving an additional $200 worth of scholarship money.

The 2015 Court of Honor will have the responsibility of representing the City of Dowagiac throughout the year, at various local events and parades.
