One dead after mobile home fire in Buchanan

One person is dead following a fire at a mobile home park Saturday night in Buchanan.

According to the Michigan State Police, troopers from the MSP Niles Post were dispatched to a complaint of shots fired at the Riverside Estates mobile park located at 14566 North Redbud Trail, Buchanan, at 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, troopers reported hearing gunshots coming from within Lot 76. There was no information available pertaining to the occupants within.

Troopers then reported seeing smoke coming from within the trailer followed by one last gunshot. Shortly thereafter, flames were reported coming from within the trailer, which quickly became engulfed in fire.

Troopers quickly began to evacuate nearby residents and then secured the perimeter not knowing if there were other suspects in the area. Troopers then requested fire and ambulance to respond. Fire personnel from Buchanan City, Buchanan Township and Bertrand Township responded but were not able to approach immediately due to ammunition exploding from within.

Once the fire was controlled, the trailer was entered and fire personnel located one dead person. There has been no positive identification made at this time.

Michigan State Troopers were also assisted by Michigan State Police Emergency Support members and Berrien County Sheriff Department.
