Niles event to raise money for breast cancer research

Every year, Niles area residents have the opportunity to bowl with their friends while raising money for a worthy cause at Bowl for the Cure.

This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 21 at Joey Armadillo’s, located at 2732 S. 11th St., Niles.

Those that register by Feb. 1 will get a free T-shirt with a $20 entry fee.

Chris Marlin, who helps chair the event, said that all proceeds are donated to the Southwest Michigan Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for breast cancer prevention and research in southwest Michigan.

Seventy-five percent of the money stays local to fund things like mammograms, while the remaining 25 percent goes toward research.

This will be the ninth year the event has been held in Niles.

This year’s event will feature bowling, raffles, auctions, giveaways and the music of DJ Erika Renee.

Last year, just more than $13,000 was raised during one day of bowling at Joey Armadillo’s. Nearly 250 people participated.

The record for money raised was $13,400 in 2012.

The event is put on by the Niles Four Flags United States Bowling Congress.
