Brandywine girls basketball coach Josh Hood preached to his team to have some fun in its game Tuesday against Berrien Springs.

The players listened and the result was an impressive 82-48 win by the Bobcats over the Shamrocks.

“Saturday (a 54-41 Brandywine win over Ottawa Hills) we were 1-of-31 shooting threes and we just didn’t play really well,” said Hood. “I had a lot to do with that performance. I take the blame for our lack of effort. I wasn’t pleased and it funneled over. I wasn’t positive enough Saturday night. The last couple of days we got back to having some fun at practices. I thought all nine of our girls came out tonight and played well.”

Brandywine, which improved to 7-0, shot 62-percent (33-of-53) from the field and forced Berrien Springs into 33 turnovers.

The Bobcats took advantage of their size advantage. Brandywine has four girls 5-foor-10 or taller, while Berrien Springs’ tallest player was 5-foot-6.

Makenna Hartline made a living scoring in the paint for the Bobcats. The 5-foot-10 junior scored a career-high 30 points. Brooke Smith, who’s a 5-foot-11 senior, added 19 points, including four 3-pointers.

“We were very efficient,” Hood said. “We did a nice job of executing our sets.

“This program used to be known for shooting 3’s. People are finding out that we have a post game. Our girls are doing a phenomenal job of getting the ball inside and finishing.”

Jaleesa Garner added 11 points and seven steals for the Bobcats, who finished the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 41-21 halftime lead.

Tyanna Pierce and Micah McCree each scored 15 points to lead the Shamrocks, who fell to 3-4.
