The voice of Brandywine sports is one of 10 finalists to become the voice of the South Bend Cubs.

Mike Morrison, a longtime public address announcer at Brandywine High School games, is in the running to do the same for the Midwest League Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

He was chosen as a finalist over more than 100 hopefuls.

“Who knows if I will ever get another opportunity like this again — it would be a dream come true,” said the 2004 graduate of Brandywine High School.

Morrison, 29, interviewed for the job Wednesday and, as part of the interview, recorded a demo video that will be placed on the South Bend Cubs’ YouTube page in the near future.

Demo videos from the other finalists will also be posted.

Once they are, people can vote for their favorite by clicking the like button below the video.

Morrison said the South Bend Cubs plan to use feedback from the videos to determine the top two candidates that will be brought back for a final round of interviews around the end of January.

“I am encouraging the community to be honest, so if you like what you hear please vote for me,” he said. “It’s up to the voters to decide.”

Morrison, known as “Microphone Mike” to many, has been doing public announcing at Brandywine sporting events and elsewhere for 15 years.

He got his start as a high school freshman doing varsity girls basketball games.

He learned a lot in that first year, especially about what not to do.

“I uttered the word ‘airball’ when one of our girls did it,” he said. “I definitely got on the wrong side of a few parents really quickly.”

Morrison was able to survive that incident and has been public announcing ever since.

He’s announced nearly every sport, but his true love is baseball — a love fostered by announcing many games at Thomas Stadium in Niles.

“It’s my No. 1 sport and the one I feel I do the best at,” he said.

Morrison said he hopes people will watch his video and like what they see.

“Hopefully I can give the Niles community a reason to come to the ball park knowing that they have a local guy announcing for an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs,” he said.
