Niles High School is getting into the giving spirit with its seventh annual event to raise money for the Salvation Army’s Toy Shop.

Money will be raised through a variety of activities at the school and will be used to purchase teen gifts for this year’s Toy Shop running Dec. 17-20.

Since 2008, Niles High School has been collecting specifically for teens and the program has grown over the years. Originally started by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), more clubs and organizations have joined each year, inviting anyone interested in helping to join together and making it a true school-wide effort.

Activities for this year’s drive include teaming up with the Salvation Army and Walmart to collect toys outside stores, encouraging shoppers to pick up a gift or two for the teens in need. Gifts could include games, a body care set or clothes. Additionally, a snack shop is open after school where students can buy treats and donate to the worthy cause.

Staff is invited to participate in jean days leading up to the Toy Shop, with a small donation requested for their participation. Finally, a silent auction will be held at basketball games on Dec. 9 and 10 where attendees of the games are entered into a raffle in exchange for bringing a teen gift to the sporting event.

The total number of gifts ranges annually, but has previously reached almost 350, a goal the school is looking to surpass this year. Niles High School will deliver the gifts to the Salvation Army Toy Shop no later than Dec. 15.
