The Niles District Library is holding a special cookie-decorating contest next month based on a favorite children’s book.

The “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie” decorating contest will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 in the children’s department of the library, located at 620 E. Main St., Niles.

In addition to inspiring creativity, the contest is also a celebration of Laura Numeroff’s classic book series that playfully examines what would happen if you gave a mouse a cookie.

“It is a classic of children’s literature,” said Tara Hunsberger, library employee. “We are celebrating books and trying to get kids to realize that books are fun and interesting. What better way to make a book exciting than with cookies?”

Those wanting to take part in this event should register by Dec. 12 by calling the library at (269) 683-8545 ext. 106 or visiting the children’s department.

The free event will begin with a reading of “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie,” followed by the decorating contest.

Kids ages 3 to 12 will be given a sugar cookie and the supplies needed to decorate it. A panel of judges will select the best cookie. Prizes will be awarded.

“The best thing is that everyone walks away with something,” Hunsberger said. “Even if you don’t win, you get a beautifully decorated cookie.”

Kids will be treated to a showing of the movie, a craft and hot chocolate.
