A Niles woman had to be extricated from her vehicle after it slid off the road and hit a tree on Yankee Street Thursday morning.

The driver, Joan Susan Steere, 61, was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

The one-car accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Yankee Street east of M-60 in Cass County.

Steere was traveling west on Yankee Street when she lost control of the vehicle due to icy road conditions and hit a tree, the sheriff’s department reports.

The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Howard Township and Niles Township fire departments.

Seat belts were used and alcohol was not a factor. Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service assisted.
