Starters on the Brandywine football team will be well rested when the state playoffs get underway next week.

Four quarters weren’t needed Friday by the regulars as the Bobcats finished the regular season with a 62-6 win over River Valley.

A mercy-rule running clock was used in the second half as Brandywine went into halftime with a 55-0 lead.

It was the 13th straight win by the Bobcats over the Mustangs. In those games, Brandywine has outscored River Valley, 589-97.

“We cleared the bench and let everybody play in the second half,” said Brandywine coach Mike Nate, whose team improved to 8-1. “We’re happy about our regular season record. Now, the second season starts. It’s back to work Sunday when we find out who we play. We got a good chance to host a playoff game.”

Brandywine quarterback Andrew Duckett tossed four touchdown passes and ran for a score in one half of action. Duckett completed 5-of-9 passes for 92 yards and ran for 63 yards on six carries.

“(Duckett) brings it every day,” Nate said. “All those seniors are great kids.”

Marty Ward Jr. rushed for 93 yards on six carries and scored once. Ward became the school’s all-time career rushing leader in the second quarter. For his career, the 5-foot-9, 215-pounder has over 2,850 yards rushing.

“Solid running back,” Nate said about Ward. “He’s done a great job here for four years.”

Jeshua Weise added 96 yards on the ground on seven carries with a touchdown.

Charlie Rodriguez caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Other Bobcats catching touchdown passes were Austin Knapp, Matthew Kline and Drew Krueger.

River Valley, which fell to 1-8, tried to stay in the game by using some trickery. The Mustangs used the “swinging-gate” offense where the center is the lone player in front of the quarterback and most of the other players are on one side of the field.

River Valley also tried reverses on kickoff returns.

“We saw that on film,” Nate said about the “swinging-gate”. “We knew exactly what they were doing. It’s a credit to our defensive staff.”
