The Niles City Council gave its approval Monday for the Niles Main Street DDA to hold a craft beer and wine event that will serve as a fundraiser for the city’s annual Hunter Ice Festival.

The event, called “Bushels, Barrels & Pints, Oh MI” will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, near Massimo’s Pizzeria and Backside Bar, which is helping with the event.

Activities planned include beer and wine tasting, a corn hole tournament, pulled pork crawl, children’s games, pumpkin painting, fall market, ice carving and chalk the walk.

Tasting tickets are available at Massimo’s, Trailhead Mercantile or online at uncoverniles.com/ohmi.

The council also approved the Niles-Buchanan YMCA’s 33rd annual Thanksgiving Day Run for the morning of Nov. 27.

Also Monday, the

council:

• Denied National Standard’s request for a waiver of some provisions in the city’s demolition ordinance. National Standard desires to remove obsolete structures in the company’s City Complex, but without removing certain foundations, walls, basements, floors and footings, all of which are required to be removed by the ordinance.

• Accepted a bid of $33,270 from Overhead Door Company of South Bend, Indiana, for the replacement of the Street Division Garage

overhead doors.

• Recognized NCP Coatings, of Niles, for donating paint used in the city’s adopt-a-fire-hydrant program this summer/fall. Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb said between 550 and 600 fire hydrants have been painted thus far by members of the community. Lamb said there are still plenty of hydrants that need to be adopted, especially on the west side. Those interested can call the fire department at 683-0160. There is no cost to citizens who want to paint a fire hydrant.
