From pink shirts to pink earrings to pink hair, Niles High School took on a whole new color Thursday afternoon as part of the school’s effort to fight cancer.

All week, Niles High offered activities during lunch to raise awareness and money for breast cancer and other cancers during the month of October.

Students who purchased a pink wristband for $1 were allowed to head to the high school track during sixth hour. There, they played cornhole, tossed footballs and walked the track, among other activities.

Karissa Young, Students Against Destructive Decisions advisor, said approximately 500 wristbands were sold, making the SADD-sponsored event the biggest ever.

“This is a lot of kids,” said Young, who was dressed in a special “Losing is not an option” T-shirt.

Like in past years, SADD will donate a portion of the money raised to the Niles-Buchanan Relay for Life, Brian Parker Foundation and — if funding permits — a local family battling cancer.

Pink Week culminates tonight at Niles’ home football game. The community is invited to come wearing pink to support their team. Pink items will be sold throughout the game and, during the first and second quarters, a Mad Dash for Cash will be held where students run through the crowd collecting money.

A Toss Out Cancer challenge will take place at the end of the game where fans toss tennis balls in the hope of winning a prize. Half of the money collected from the purchase of tennis balls will be awarded.

Young said SADD would know how much it raised after the football game.
