The Niles Vikings are still in search of two victories to earn an automatic qualifying spot in the MHSAA post season.

Niles (4-2) is coming off a 35-13 loss to Portage Central last Fridaynight.

The Vikings gave up 356 yards rushing to the Mustangs, including 136 to running back Brandon Sturgeon.

Niles also gave up some big plays during the contest.

The Vikings will have to stiffen up on defense if the team wants to take a step toward the playoffs as St. Joseph is coming to town Friday night for a big SMAC West Division contest.

The Bears are also 4-2 heading into Friday night’s Homecoming game at Niles.

Last week St. Joseph destroyed Benton Harbor 59-8.

In that game, the Bears ran for 314 yards, including 107 by Derek Burton.

On the flip side, St. Joseph was just 3-of-8 for 16 yards.

The Tigers were limited to just 57 yards in total offense.

While the Vikings continue to roll up big numbers on offense, finishing with 341 yards in total offense, the team was unable to finish off drives last week against Portage Central.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. There will be an extended halftime for Homecoming festivities.

Brandywine at Buchanan

The Bobcats (5-1) are just a win away from qualifying for the state playoffs for the third straight year.

Brandywine would love to get that victory against arch rival Buchanan, which hosts the Bobcats Friday night.

The Bucks are just 2-4 under first-year coach Reid McBeth.

After starting the season 0-3, Buchanan rebounded to defeat Cassopolis and Comstock.

The Bucks’ winning streak was stopped by perennial state powerhouse Mendon, 62-14.

The Bobcats are coming off a 45-14 rout of Bronson at its Homecoming last week.

Brandywine ran up 359 yards in total offense while running just 33 plays on that side of the football.

Marty Ward Jr. led the way with 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Andrew Duckett threw for 100 yards and a pair of scores.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
