It took overtime to decide the first BCS Athletic Conference soccer championship.

And, for the first time in school history, Brandywine won the title with a 2-1 win over rival Buchanan in the championship match Tuesday.

The Bobcats’ Dominic Stella scored in the first overtime off an assist from Zach Schmidt to give Brandywine the victory.

“Great hard fought game by both teams,” Brandywine coach Evan Winkler said. “Cade Vargo kept the Bucks in the game with some stellar goaltending. Brandywine controlled much of the first half and overtime and put a lot of pressure on Buchanan defense.”

Steve Mugenzi had five of the Bobcats’ 10 shots in the match.

Brandywine’s Brett Jacobs Kudzia Nyasvisvo, Michael Okayama, Wyatt Eager and Justin Williamson played great defense in the second half and overtime to hold the Bucks off according to Winkler.

“Brandywine played tough and grinded out a great team win,” Winkler said. “I am so proud of my team and so happy for them and they deserve this. They play with a lot of heart. The seniors have come a long way and have been through a lot only winning one game their freshman year.”

Brandywine finished BCS play with a perfect 8-0 record. The Bobcats are 14-4 with a pair of regular season games left to play.
