Times set for trick-or-treat in Niles Township

The Niles Township Board of Trustees set trick-or-treat hours, reduced the size of its planning commission board and chose a company to demolish a burned residential structure during Monday’s regular meeting.

Children will have the opportunity to go door-to-door collecting candy in the township from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31. Jim Ringler, township treasurer said the township likes to be consistent with the surrounding communities on trick-or-treat times.

The board also voted to decrease the number of people on the planning commission from nine to seven.

Ringler said the move was prompted by the recent resignation of two planning commission members Gladys Bybee and Mike Ellis. It can be difficult, Ringler said, to find people to fill the open spots. The law allows for seven-member boards.

“It was an opportune time to take it down to seven,” he said.

The planning commission meets at least quarterly and hears requests for special land use permits, among other things. Members are paid per meeting.

The board also accepted a bid of $5,795 for the demolition of a residential structure at 1002 Herbert St. that burned in a fire. Ringler said the homeowner did not respond to requests by code enforcement to clean up the property.

“We felt it is better to have the structure removed for all kinds of reasons, safety and others,” he said.
