Mills ‘Butch’ Hampton

Mills “Butch” Hampton, 94, of Dowagiac, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at The Timbers of Cass County.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at Clark Chapel and Cremation Services, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, Michigan. A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. A graveside committal will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac.

Butch was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Sumner, Mississippi, to his parents Mills and Cora (Bradford), Hampton, Sr. Butch married Gerothy Crump in 1945 and they moved to Dowagiac in 1950. He worked as a factory worker, forklift driver, and in the tool & die department at National Motor.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Clarkdale, Mississippi. He enjoyed being with the group from the Council on Aging and visiting is sister every day. Butch was handy with making things and fixing things. He would say, “if he could not fix it, it had to be broken.” He loved to hang out with his grandkids, especially watching them play football. In his early days you could find him hunting and fishing. Over the past few years his attention has been devoted to feeding birds.

His surviving family includes his daughter Gerothy (Ramon) Caldwell of Dowagiac; his grandkids, John D. Paxton, Raymond Washington, Amy Robinson, Ramon Jr., Brian Lewis, Marcus Lewis, DeeDee Lewis; one sister Mary Crump of LaPorte, Indiana; special niece Joann; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, wife, son James Dean Hampton, and 10 siblings.
