Dowagiac children will still be able to let their inner monster come forth on All Hollows’ Eve, as trick-or-treating will take place at its regularly scheduled time on Oct. 31.

The Dowagiac City Council announced on Monday that children will be able to partake in the time honored Halloween tradition from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. that Friday evening. These hours are in line with the established times from prior years.

“We’re already starting to get calls on this,” said City Manager Kevin Anderson.

Complicating the scheduling of the haunting hours this year was the fact that high school football playoffs are scheduled to begin that weekend,

Anderson said. With the possibility that the Chieftains could be hosting a game that night, there were some concerns that increased traffic and parking could interfere with the safe transit of costumed caravans within the surrounding neighborhood.

“After speaking with police and speaking with the schools, it seems to make the most sense to keep it on its traditional night, and not try to move it around based on other activities,” Anderson said. “There will always be something that may have the opportunity to interfere.”

The council also advised that trick-or-treaters limit their visitations to homes that have their porch light on that evening.

Other business passed by the council of Monday included:

• Approval of two Industrial Facilities Tax Exceptions for Ameriwood and Premier Tool & Die Corporation.

• Approval of a health care agreement with the Municipal Employees’ Retirement System for members of the Sergeant and Patrol Officer POLC.

• Authorization of special assessment fees on a number of city properties in violation of weed and blight ordinances.

• The establishment of a public hearing on Monday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. to consider if the garage located at 311 Grove St. is a public nuisance.

• Authorization of budget amendments through Sept. 22.

• Payment of bills and payroll in the amount of $792,102.53.
