After 12 years in operation, the Comcast customer service center in Niles will close at the end of October.

Niles-area Comcast cable subscribers who want to have a question answered in person will have to travel a lot farther starting this fall.

Effective Oct. 30, the Comcast customer service and payment center located at 1930 Niles-Buchanan Rd. in Niles Township will be closing, according to a letter sent to customers earlier this month.

Joe Trost, Comcast spokesman, confirmed the closing date and said the move is a reflection of a desire by customers to utilize the company’s services in different ways.

“More than ever, customers are choosing to interact with us and access and pay for our products and services in ways that are more convenient for them, including over the phone and online, mailed payments, self-installation kits and professional technician visits, and this move reflects their overwhelming preference,” Trost said.

The Comcast customer service center in Niles has been open since 2002.

Trost said they are in the process of finding other opportunities within the company for the two full-time employees who work there.

In the letter, Comcast said it would be taking steps to inform its customers of upcoming plans and payment options available to them. Comcast said customers can make payments, schedule appointments or receive assistance by calling 1-800-XFINITY. Other options are available through the company’s online service at customer.comcast.com.

Customers are also being directed to using the nearest Comcast service center located at 1920 E. McKinley Ave., Mishawaka, Indiana.
