Nick Karamalegos’ hat trick lifted the visiting Edwardsburg soccer team to a 4-3 win over Dowagiac in a key Wolverine Conference West Division match Wednesday.

Karamalegos had a goal and an assist in the first half as the Eddies opened up a 2-1 advantage on the Chieftains, whose lone goal came from Jorge Ruiz.

Karamalegos opened the second half with a goal in the 41st minute to extend the Eddies’ advantage to 3-1.

But Dowagiac responded with back-to-back goals to knot the match at 3-3 in the 63rd minute.

Nick Foote cut the lead to 3-2 in the 59th minute off an assist by Ruiz and then freshman Gage Williams got the equalizer four minutes later.

Both teams would create scoring chances over the next 10 minutes, but when Dowagiac failed to clear the ball out from in front of its net, Karamalegos struck again, this time with the match-winner in the 74th minute.

“We were sloppy and we gave up sloppy goals,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “Harpeet (Singh) is a good goalie, he just had a bad game.”
