The Chieftain Invitational turned into a single match between Cass County rivals Saturday.

With Michigan Lutheran dropping out of the annual tournament, Dowagiac hosted Cassopolis.

Jeremiah Guernsey had three goals and an assist, while Jose Lopez scored a pair of goals and picked up two assists in the Chieftains’ 8-1 win over the Rangers.

Guernsey scored a pair of first half goals, both off assists from Lopez. He assisted on Lopez’s goal, which gave Dowagiac a 3-0 advantage.

Jonah Hannafius scored off an assist by Dylan Armstrong to cut the Dowagiac advantage to 3-1.

Dowagiac finished off the half with goals by Guernsey and Antonio Brito.

The Chieftains (1-3) played more ball control in the second half and slowed the pace of the match tremendously.

Guernsey picked up the hat trick in the 48th minute before Lopez scored again and Gavin Green finished the second with a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

Dowagiac outshot Cassopolis 21-4.

The Rangers’ Collin Kelley had seven saves.
