Rod & Roll: 24th annual auto show this Saturday

The cars lining the streets of downtown Dowagiac on Saturday will look a bit different from the usual array of vehicles packing parking spaces on most summer weekends.

The 24th annual Rod & Roll Classic Auto Show will roll into the city this weekend. Between 200 and 250 vintage automobiles are expected to be on display, lined up on Front, Commercial and Beeson streets.

“We expect an extremely wide variety of vehicles, with everything from the beginning of car history to vehicles that are in still in production today,” said organizer Dave Stolpe. “It makes it pretty interesting, the fact that it’s just an antique car show.”

Most people entering cars into the show live within 100 miles of Dowagiac, with a blend of locals and residents of neighboring western Michigan and Indiana communities making a majority of the pool, Stolpe said.

Stolpe, the owner of Dowagiac Auto Body, is again co-chairing the event with his wife Jennifer, and Kris Lamphere, the owner of WHO kNEW? Consignment. The three have been responsible for putting together the event for the past four years on behalf of the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce.

Entrants receive more than just the opportunity to exhibit their vehicles to visitors; they also receive a complimentary swag bag, containing a commemorative mug, T-shirts and special offers from Dowagiac businesses.

Vehicles will be judged by their entrants themselves, with the top 20 receiving trophies. In addition, the Queen’s Choice award will return this year, with Miss Dowagiac Mackenzie Whitmyer receiving the honor to pick the winner.

Last year, Cassopolis’ Tim and Terrie Tabbert received the Best of Show award for their red 1961 Ford Econoline pickup truck. Miss Dowagiac 2013 Amanda Hassle chose Dick Machalleck’s black 2000 Plymouth Prowler for the Queen’s Choice Award.

More than 200 auto enthusiasts showed off their vehicles the previous event, buoyed mostly due to the sunny weather that day, Stolpe said. The business owner said he anticipates a similar response this year, provided the weather proves favorable Saturday.

“I’ve never seen downtown Dowagiac fuller than it is when the car show is in town,” Stolpe said.
