Supermodel Kate Upton is helping make the future a little brighter at Niles High School.

Through her work with the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief fund, the Niles Athletics Department received at $50,000 grant from the aforementioned fund.

Niles Athletics Director and Upton’s father, Jeff, said the department would use the money to replace the high school football stadium lights, which were installed in the 1950s.

“Kate asked me what she could do to help our athletic department and we are all grateful for her assistance,” Jeff said. “I’m glad we could bring this project to completion.”

Jeff said his daughter volunteered during the Cantor Fitzgerald Charity Day in 2011 and 2012, leading to a sizeable donation to the Readiness Center in Benton Harbor in 2011 and the $50,000 donation to Niles Athletics in 2012.

While the school had to apply for the grant, Jeff said they would not have received it without Kate’s help.

Niles will also be using donations from Coca-Cola and the Upton Foundation to pay for the lights.

The new system will result in improved lighting, decreased electrical costs, decreased light spillage and the elimination of four view-blocking light poles at the 40-yard line markers.

Jeff said it would be a drastic improvement players, coaches and fans.

“I hope Coach (Antwon) Jones throws the ball all over the field, and this year our receivers and running backs will be able to actually see the ball,” he said.

Jeff also thanked Superintendent Michael Lindley and the district’s finance and facility teams for assisting in the project.

“Without their support this project would’ve never been completed, even with the donations,” he said.

The lights will be delivered Aug. 13 and installation will begin at that time.
