This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the HIV epidemic, the virus that causes AIDS. HIV is most commonly spread through unprotected sex, sharing of needles with someone infected with HIV, or transmission from an infected mother to her baby.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people infected with HIV in the United States do not know. Although Michigan has low incidence of HIV infections, the number of newly infected is highest among individuals aged 25-34 followed by individuals aged 13-24, according the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Many strides have been made in the fight against HIV, particularly in the area of medical treatment. People can live for years with HIV infection especially with proper medication and care. However, it is important for people to know their HIV status, be diagnosed early and get linked to physician care to help ensure the best health outcomes.

The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department offers free, anonymous and confidential HIV testing and recommends that people of all ages be tested as part of their routine for health care. For more information about testing please call the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department at (269) 621-3143 or visit our website at www.vbcassdhd.org
