Dr. Seuss visit among March events at Fernwood

Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is offering the following events and activities:

Dr. Seuss Storytelling

Saturday, March 1, 1–2 p.m.

Dress in your best Seuss-inspired attire and celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Reading Month at Fernwood. Miss Cindy will read favorite Dr. Seuss stories, sing songs, and sign Reading Month cards for points. Hungry for a treat? Colorful Seuss cupcakes will be available for purchase. Free with paid Fernwood admission.

Fernwood Photography Club

Sunday, March 2, 2 p.m.

The Fernwood Photography Club is open to all ages and levels of experience. The group is non-competitive and low-key, with a focus on fun. Each meeting combines a one-hour indoor meeting followed by an outdoor photo shoot. Visit the photography club’s new website at http://www.fernwoodphotoclub.com/. There is no charge for club participation, although Fernwood membership or admission fee is required. Elements of Light Gardening

Sunday, March 2, 1:30–3 p.m.

Light gardening is the art of cultivating plants indoors under artificial lights. Come learn what physical features should be included in a light garden to maximize the variety of plants that can be grown indoors, and what types of plants do best in a light garden. $10 (members free) Register by March 1.

St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

Friday, March 14, 6 p.m.

Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, so celebrate with the tastes of a traditional Irish meal prepared by Chef Tim Carrigan, Fernwood’s resident Irishman. Meal includes an Irish brew. $15.95 per person. Reservations required by March 12.

Chicago Flower and Garden Show Trip

Wednesday, March 19, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cure your spring fever with this great day trip to the windy city’s annual spring Chicago Flower & Garden Show. Held at Navy Pier, this amazing event features display gardens from the most practical to the most exotic. The popular garden market and how-to programming also can be enjoyed throughout the day. Lunch is on your own at any of the convenient dining spots at the Pier. Fee includes transportation and admission. $75 (members $60)

Winter Yoga

Thursdays, 12:15-1:30 p.m.

Got cabin fever? Feeling sluggish? Get going with yoga at Fernwood on Thursdays with Greta Hurst. Yoga helps improve health, heal aches and pains, and keep sickness at bay. It is a great way to start the year off right. Walk-ins are welcome. $10 (Members $8)

Spring Garden Symposium

Saturday, March 22, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Fernwood’s Spring Garden Symposium features four top-notch speakers in the garden world: Amanda Thomsen, author of the blog and book, “Kiss My Aster”; Kelly Norris, award-winning author and plantsman from Iowa and the first horticulture manager at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden; Thomas Smarr, Director of Horticulture with the Friends of the High Line in New York City; and Ken Druse, award-winning garden writer and photographer.

Ken was called “the guru of natural gardening” in The New York Times, and is best known for his 18 gardening books, and for his podcast and public radio show, Ken Druse Real Dirt. Register before March 16 for $80 (Fernwood Members $64). Register between March 16 and 21 for $90 (Fernwood Members $72). Includes lunch. Save the Date! Fernwood’s Annual Garden Party

Saturday, June 21

Join Fernwood on the evening of Saturday, June 21, for the annual Garden Party. Enjoy music and dinner, live and silent auctions, and dancing. The silent auction will offer one-of-a-kind planted containers, and among the quality live auction items is a trip for two to Machu Picchu, Peru. Save the date and watch for further details.
