Tournaments highlight opening weekend of wrestling

The high school wrestling season kicks off this weekend with a handful of tournaments in southwest Michigan.

Dowagiac and Brandywine will head to Vicksburg for the annual Vicksburg Bulldog Invitational, while Cassopolis will be hosting Steve Linton Memorial Team Duals. Niles and Edwardsburg will compete in the Southwest Michigan Classic in Allegan.

Girls basketball continues tonight with a handful of league games.

 

Bulldog Invitational

Dowagiac and Brandywine will be joined by Berrien Springs, Coloma, Delton, Hopkins, Lakewood, Schoolcraft, Three Rivers and host Vicksburg.

Medals will be awarded to each wrestler who wins four or more matches.

Admission is $5 per person. No league passes will be accepted.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin in the team tournament at 9 a.m.

Here are the match-ups:

• Dowagiac vs. Brandywine – Round 1

• Dowagiac vs. Lakewood – Round 2

• Brandywine vs. Coloma – Round 2

• Dowagiac vs. Hopkins – Round 3

• Brandywine vs. Three Rivers – Round 3

• Dowagiac vs. Delton – Round 4

• Brandywine vs. Vicksburg – Round 4

• Dowagiac vs. Schoolcraft – Round 5

• Brandywine vs. Berrien Springs – Round 5

 

Steve Linton Memorial

Cassopolis will play host to Martin, River Valley, the Niles B team, Hartford and Bridgman-New Buffalo.

Medals will be awarded to the first place team as well as each wrestler who wins four or more matches.

Admision is $5 for all day or $15 for a family.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin in the team tournament at 9 a.m.

• Niles B vs. Bridgman-New Buffalo – Round 1

• Cassopolis vs. River Valley – Round 2

• Niles B vs. Hartford – Round 2

• Cassopolis vs. Niles B – Round 3

• Cassopolis vs. Hartford – Round 4

• Niles B vs. Martin – Round 4

• Cassopolis vs. Bridgman-New Buffalo – Round 5

• Niles B vs. River Valley – Round 5

 

Southwest Classic

Niles will take its “A” team to Allegan to compete against the host Tigers, Belding, Coopersville, Edwardsburg, Harper Creek,

Hasting, Kalamazoo Central, Lawton, Leslie, Otsego, Portage Central, Portage Northern, Shelby, Grand Rapids West Catholic and Whitehall.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Admission is $5 per person.

 

Girls basketball

Dowagiac and Edwardsburg will open up Wolverine Conference West Division action tonioght.

The Chieftains (0-1) are hosting Berrien Springs, while the Eddies (1-0) will travel to South Haven.

Both games are slated to tipoff at 7:15 p.m.

In Big 16 West Division play, Niles will travel to St. Joseph. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

The Vikings will be playing back-to-back games having opened the season Thursday night against Buchanan.

The Cassopolis girls basketball team will also be in action.

The Rangers travel to Benton Harbor to face Countryside. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Admission to all games is $5 per person.
