A Berrien County Sheriff’s Department deputy was injured Tuesday during an investigation of drug activity at a convenience store near the state line in Niles Township.

Sheriff Paul Bailey said officers with the department’s narcotics unit noticed the target of an ongoing investigation pull into a mini mart on State Line Road west of Michigan Highway 51 around 11 a.m.

When a uniformed officer stepped out of his vehicle, the suspect backed into the officer’s leg, and fled the scene.

Bailey said the officer was treated and released from the hospital in the same day. His name was not released as of press time.

The suspect was tracked to the Indian Springs apartment complex on Portage Road in South Bend, Ind. Bailey said witnesses saw the suspect enter an apartment there.

The South Bend SWAT team searched the apartments, but was unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect’s identity was not released before the Niles Daily Star went to press.
