Stark drives in pair to lift Chieftains to victory

PLAINWELL — The Dowagiac baseball team scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull out a 3-1 victory over host Plainwell in the opening round of the Wolverine Conference Baseball Tournament Tuesday.

The Chieftains will now host Allegan, a 7-6 winner over Coloma, Friday at 4 p.m. at Rotary Park.

Down 1-0 heading to the sixth, Cal Cox singled and moved to second when DaQuan Brooks laid down a bunt, which he beat out to put runners at first and second for the Chieftains.

Matt Smith followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Cox to third and Brooks to second. Garrett Stark then lined a two-run single to left-centerfield to give the Chieftains a 2-1 advantage.

In the seventh, Dean Klann singled, stole second and moved to third on a single by Brett Scanlon. Cox hit into a fielder’s choice play allowing Klann to score an insurance run.

Cox went the distance, tossing a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

The Chieftains finished with nine hits, including a double Zach Williams. Cox was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Stark was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
