Dowagiac wins first games over the weekend

Buchanan blanked Dowagiac 7-0 in the championship game of the Bryan Frazier Memorial Saturday afternoon.

The Chieftains reached the finals with a 5-3 win over Hartford. The Bucks advanced to the title game with a 16-3 win over Benton Harbor.

In the title game, Buchanan scored two runs in each of the first two innings and then played solid defense and got good pitching from a quartet of hurlers.

Justin Henderson started for the Bucks and picked up the win with relief help from Lyman Thomas, Jarrett Thomas and Blake Graber.

Alex Leiter was 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs to lead Buchanan. Lyman Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jeff Mucha also doubled, while Dallis Reynolds tripled for the Bucks.

Dowagiac got a solid pitching performance from Matt Smith, who went the distance, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits.

Dean Klann had two of the Chieftains’ four hits, including a double.

Against the Tigers, Jamie Harkrider scattered seven hits to earn the victory for the Bucks.

Reynolds had two hits including a double, while Leiter had two hits with a triple and A.J. Reed tripled.

The Chieftains took advantage of 10 walks and a hit batter to defeat Hartford in the opening game of the tournament.

Nate Lindsey turned in a gutty performance on the mound as he went the distance, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs.

Dowagiac had just four hits in the contest, led by Scanlon’s double. Klann, Smith and Austin Broda had the other hits for the Chieftains.

Dowagiac at Coloma

The Chieftains picked up their first victory of the season as they split with Coloma Friday night.

Dowagiac won the first game 7-4 behind the pitching of Cal Cox, who tossed a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Cox was also 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Zach Williams was 3-for-3 with a triple. Brett Scanlon added a home run and three RBIs, while Klann had a triple.

The second game was shortened to just five innings due to darkness and the Chieftains lost 6-2.

Brody Froehlich took the loss.

Klann had two hits for the Chieftains, who also got a double from Scanlon.
