PORTAGE — The Niles softball team swept a SMAC West Division doubleheader from Portage Northern Tuesday.

The Vikings won the first game 13-0 behind the pitching of Molly VanDeKeere.

Niles completed the sweep with a 13-6 win over the Huskies in the nightcap.

Megan McKeel picked up the victory.

“I thought we played really well tonight,” Niles coach Ryan Frontczak said. “Can’t say great yet, but really well. I think we are putting things together right now. We are playing the best ball we have played all year. I feel our girls are talking more and playing a good brand of softball.

“We are hitting well fielding well and playing almost error free ball. We had 32 hits in a doubleheader and 10 extra base hits. We still have things to work on though. I know for a fact we will just keep working hard. Our practices have been some of the best I have seen. Our girls have gotten better and better each day we play. It’s been fun to watch this team develop. We are playing as a TEAM. I feel if one girl does not play well we all pick that person up and help them get back on track.”
