MILTON TOWNSHIP — A 27-year-old Elkhart man died in a two-vehicle accident that involved a Niles man Thursday morning in Milton Township.

Alan Steven, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Michigan State Police. The driver of the other vehicle, James Heiermann, 35, of Niles, had minor injuries and was released.

The accident occurred on Redfield Road near Carter Street in Cass County at approximately 7:10 a.m.

Police said Steven lost control on the snow-covered road and slid into Heirmann’s oncoming pickup. Steven was not wearing a seatbelt.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Niles Township Fire, Edwardsburg Ambulance, Cass County Prosecutor’s office, Cass County Medical Examiner’s office and the MSP Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The accident remains under investigation.
