Frigid 5K Saturday in Niles

The fourth annual Frigid 5K should be a record-setter according to Chris Pawielski of Cycle and Fitness of Niles, who is the sponsor of the event.

The race will be held Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Niles Amphitheater. Cost is $25 with a race t-shirt or $20 without a shirt. Registration forms are available at Cycle and Fitness as well as at www.nilesf5k.com.

No online registration is available at this time. You may also register by calling Cycle Fitness at 684-2000.

The race has grown each year according to Pawielski. Last year there were 185 runners who braved the frigid temperatures.

This year the pre-registration stands at 160 runners and with a temperature in the low 40s forecasted for Saturday, a new record should be set with ease.

“Our goal originally was to have an active event that coincided with the Hunter Ice Festival,” Pawielski said. “We wanted to do our part. The race has grown every year and I am thinking right now it will be a significant growth this year.”

Justin Kowalski was the overall men’s winner with a time of 17:48. Andrea Hutchins was the female winner with a time of 19:54. Hutchins was the defending champion of the race.

Cycle and Fitness is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday and will be open on race day beginning at 7 p.m. Runners can register up until 8:30.
