BATTLE CREEK – The No. 6-ranked Niles wrestling team needed to put together a streak to remain undefeated Wednesday night.

In a match that was close heading into the 103-pound bout, the Vikings ran off five consecutive victories and went on to defeat No. 10-ranked Battle Creek Lakeview 43-21. Niles followed that up with a 51-12 win over Battle Creek Central to improve to 18-0 on the season.

Courtland Lamberton got the Vikings rolling with a pin of Lai Sang at 103-pounds, Brendon Meek followed that up with a pin, while Nicholas Zimmerman and Darek Bullock-Mills both earned wins. Josh Dayhuff capped the five-match run with a pin of Brandon Williams in 3:56 at 130-pounds.

The match was much closer than the final score indicated according to Niles’ coach Todd Hesson.

“We won six matches in the final 15 seconds, including three of them by pins,” he said. “We had to shuffle up our line-up, but all of our kids did well. Kevin Reed and Noah Hall both had big pins to start the dual, but Sean Craig, Ryan Casey, Courtland Lamberton, Brendon Meek and Josh Dayhuff all had big pins to seal the dual.

“Unfortunately, I thought we had a little bit of a letdown in our second dual and wrestled flat. We still have a lot of work to be done, as we will be headed to this Saturday’s NIC dual.”

The Vikings will compete in the NIC Super Dual at South Bend Washington High School.
