A Dowagiac woman who struck a horse with her vehicle Wednesday night was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Krista Hartman, 35, told police at 8:50 p.m. she hit the animal while traveling north on Michigan Highway 51 just north of Wells Street in Pokagon Township, which is in Cass County.

Hartman was carrying one passenger, Alexander Hartman, 2, of Dowagiac.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Pride Care Ambulance, Pokagon Fire and the Michigan State Police responded.

Seat belts and child restraints were used at the time of the accident, which remains under investigation.
