Niles volleyball trio receives honors

A trio of Niles volleyball players were named to the Big 16 Conference All-West Division squad for 2012.

Junior Miranda Baker and senior Ashley Love were first team selections, while senior Courtney Shirrell was a second team pick.

Besides All-Division, Love was also named All-Region and Academic All-State. She led the Vikings this year with 397 kills, finishing with 1,397 career kills. She also had 215 digs, 141 points and 51 blocks.

Baker was also named All-Region. She had 392 kills, led Niles with 121 points, had 23 aces and scored 179 points.

Shirrell was also an All-Region selection. She had 956 assists, 249 points, 36 aces, 3 blocks and 22 kills this season.

The Vikings finished with an impressive 30-12-5 record this season.

“I’m very proud of my players’ hard work and it’s wonderful to see them gain the recognition they deserve for their stellar play this year,” first-year Niles coach Jenny Nate said.
