Dowagiac stats keep piling up

The Dowagiac football team continues to run up some big numbers this fall.

The Chieftains improved to 10-0 Friday night with a 36-0 victory over Otsego in the opening round of the Division 4 Playoffs.

Dowagiac will be looking to win its second straight district title when it hosts Grand Rapids South Christian at Chris Taylor-Alumi Field Friday night.

So far this season, the Chieftains have rolled up 2,646 yards rushing for an average of 264.6 yards per game.

Dowagiac has had 13 different players run the football in 2012, led by Todd McIntyre’s 530 yards on 60 carries (8.8 yards per carry). Brett Scanlon is second on the team in rushing with 447 yards to go along with a team-high nine rushing touchdowns.

The Chieftains have thrown for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Cal Cox is 22-of-41 for 383 yards and five TDs, while Scanlon is 20-of-36 for 316 yards and five touchdowns.

McIntyre is the top receiver with 13 receptions for 252 yards. Dontel Highsmith is second in receptions with seven for 152 yards. He has a team-high four receiving touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, D.J. Hunt remains Dowagiac’s leading tackler with 76 stops. He also has 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown.

Derek Stark leads the Chieftains with four interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. Carl Grant leads the team in tackles for loss with 13 and sacks with five.

On special teams, Scanlon has connected on 44-of-47 extra points. Is 6-of-14 on field goal attempts with a long of 36 and has a punting average of 41.2 yards per kick with a long of 67.

While Dowagiac does not have a real standout in kickoff returns, Brendon Murray leads the team in punt returns with six for 152 yards and an average of 25.3 yards per return. He also returned one for a touchdown.
