Police nab suspect in armed robbery

The suspect in an armed robbery of a Cass County gas station is in custody.

Edward Payson Wing, 39, was apprehended recently in Calvin Township according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Wing was wanted in connection with an armed robbery that took place Sept. 18 at the Hilltop Gas Station in Union.

Detectives observed Wing’s vehicle around 5:05 p.m. Monday. After a brief pursuit, the suspect drove into a cornfield in the area of Walnut Road near Sears Street south of Vandalia. The suspect then fled on foot into a cornfield.

From there, Wing led police on a manhunt that involved K-9 units and a Michigan State Police helicopter.

During the manhunt the Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Cass County Drug Enforcement Team, Dowagiac Police Department K-9, Michigan State Police Niles Post, Michigan State Police Air Division, Cass County Marine Division and Cass County Animal Control.
