Visiting South Haven scored four first half goals on its way to a 5-1 Wolverine Conference West Division victory Monday.

The Rams, ranked No. 2 in the latest coaches poll, got a pair of goals from Tony Canonie, one in each half. Also scoring in the first half were Ryan Dorow, Adam Macyauski and Omar Calderon.

South Haven scored the first goal of the second half to increase its advantage to 5-0.

Travis True averted the shutout in the 73rd minute as he took a pass from Adrian Martinez and beat the South Haven keeper.

“Their (South Haven) offense is strong,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “They bring it hard. You have to counter attack hard to keep pressure. You either run them or they run you. They definitely ran us.

“Our defense stayed tight and played well overall. That was our goal to stay tight and cut off through passes. The first two goals were headers and that’s something our keeper should be coming out and grabbing the ball but he didn’t. So once they get some momentum like that they just get hungrier.”

South Haven out shot Dowagiac 19-6 in the match.

Paul Lamphere had a pair of saves before receiving a yellow card. Nate Stewart replaced Lamphere in the net and stopped 12 shots.

Dowagiac will continue a busy week Tuesday as it travels to Buchanan to play a match that was originally scheduled for last Thursday. The Chieftains will then wrap up the week with a match Wednesday against host Three Rivers.
