PORTAGE – The Niles volleyball team captured the Bronze Division of the Portage Northern Invitational Saturday.

The Viking split with Three Rivers (25-22, 10-25) and Bay City (18-25, 25-21) in pool play. Niles defeated Walled Lake Western 25-11 and 25-18 in Power Pool before knocking off host Portage Northern 26-24 an 25-14.

In the semifinals, the Vikings defeated Edwardsburg 25-15 and 25-16 to advance to the championship match where they defeated Schoolcraft 25-16 and 25-17.

“The girls had a great day on the court against solid competition from all over the state,” Niles coach Jenny Nate said. “The leadership of our starters set the pace for the day and after splitting a couple early on, we were able consistently win every game for the rest of the tournament. My younger players were able to get more playing time and I was pleased that with various players on the court we maintained our intensity and focus. It was a great team effort.”
