Todd McIntyre and Brendan Murray both scored two touchdowns in the first half as Dowagiac routed visiting Comstock 55-6 Thursday.

McIntyre scored on a 44-yard run and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Cal Cox as the Chieftains roared out to a 49-0 halftime lead.

Murray added an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown and scored on a 9-yard run as Dowagiac rolled up 273 yards in total offense in 24 minutes of play.

Brett Scanlon, who was a perfect 7-of-7 on extra point kicks, added a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Austin Broada and Shane Bevins capped the first half scoring with a 44-yard pass reception from Scanlon and a 12-yard run respectively.

Dowagiac spent much of the first half on the Comstock side of the field beginning with the opening kickoff when the Colts went for the onsides, which did not travel the required 10 yards. The Chieftains also started drives at the Comstock 20 and 44.

Defensively, besides pitching the shutout, the Dowagiac defense allowed just 24 yards in total offense to Comstock.

The Chieftains gave up a 79-yard touchdown in the third quarter, which went by quickly due to the running clock.

Kendrick Davis connected with Dustin Bonds, who got behind the Dowagiac defense for the big play. The extra point kicked failed and the Chieftains led 49-6 heading to the final quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Bevins picked up his second touchdown of the night on a run through the middle of the Comstock defense from 16 yards out.

Dowagiac (2-0) finished the night with 292 yards rushing and 104 yards passing as Cox and Scanlon combined to go 6-of-7. Both threw a touchdown pass.

Comstock (0-2) was held to 110 yards in total offense, including just six yards on the ground.

Colts’ quarterbacks Davis and Michael Derhammer combined to go 6-of-14.

Despite the victory, Chieftain coach Mike Stanger was not pleased with his team’s performance.

“We made some mental mistakes,” Stanger said. “We need to clean up mental. There are a lot of aspects to the game of football. We have to be mentally tough. The penalties came from us just screwing up snap counts.”

Bevins led Dowagiac in rushing with 52 yards on five carries, while Lucas Petro added 51 on yards on six totes. Derek Stark had 50 yards on one carry.

Cox was 3-for-4 for 54 yards and Scanlon 2-for-2 for 51 yards.

Dowagiac will get back to work next Friday night when it heads to Plainwell for another non-divisional game.
