The Brandywine football team began its 2012 campaign Friday night with a convincing 40-6 win over the visiting Lawrence Tigers.

The Bobcats (1-0) wasted no time at all in showing Lawrence who the bigger, stronger and faster team was going to be.

On the second offensive play of the season, senior tailback Cortlan Gordon took a handoff and went 50 yards nearly untouched for Brandywine’s first touchdown of 2012.

It wouldn’t take long for the Bobcats and Gordon to strike again.

After a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Gordon coasted 20 yards for his second touchdown of the evening on his team’s fifth play from the line of scrimmage.

The onslaught would continue when senior tailback Michael Shelton, would add a 5-yard touchdown run of his own. Shortly after that, Gordon would cap off his team’s impressive start by adding his third touchdown run from 35 yards out, putting the bobcats ahead 26-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Brandywine’s roll slowed a little in the second. However, any momentum lost was immediately recovered when the Bobcats delved into its bag of tricks and came up with a halfback pass from Shelton to senior wide-out Brian Kline that covered 65 yards and put the Cats up 32-0 at the end of the half.

Lawrence, (who hasn’t won a football game since 2010) looked a little less rattled in the second half. The Tigers would finally get on the board when back-up quarterback Derek Gribler punched one in from the 1-yard line. The defense also played well enough to avoid the “mercy rule” being called into affect.

Though the Tigers’ play was much improved in the second half, Gordon would end up with the final word. He scored his fourth touchdown on a dive play he took 40 yards, bringing his total to 220 yards on 18 carries.

For the Bobcats, this win was a cultivation of weeks of preparation, hard work and anticipation. This was a sentiment that both Gordon and Shelton shared after the game.

“Our team was pumped up. The crowd was great and we all came together,” Gordon said.

“The game went really well, everyone’s hard work really paid off and we’re on the right track,” Shelton added.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday when they take on Centreville at home.
