BENTON HARBOR — The Niles golf team opened up its season at Blossom Trail at the Big 16 West Division Jamboree Wednesday.

St. Joseph easily won the event with a team total of 179. It was led by medalist Courtney Rooker, who shot 41.

Lakeshore was second at 236 and Niles third at 260. Mattawan and Benton Harbor rounded out the order of finish at 268 and 295 respectively.

Abby Mattson led the Vikings with a 59. Katie Holmes shot 61, Sarah Cramer 66, Morgan Cook 74 and Ele Hein 75.

“For me getting in town fairly late and them practicing on their own, I thought they played fairly well today,” new Niles golf coach Dan Palmer said. “This was my first time seeing them play, so I was doing a lot more observing and seeing what they had. As a whole, as I told the girls at the end, I was excited to see a lot of good shots. I was impressed with the way they held it together and their maturity. We will improve.”
