Niles freshmen, JV volleyball teams swept

The Niles freshmen and JV volleyball teams were swept by Penn Monday night.

The Viking freshmen team dropped a 25-23 and 25-13 decision to Penn, while the JV was defeated 25-11 and 25-12.

Amanda Chaffin had six digs and two aces for the freshmen team, which also got two kills from Cami Christie, two assists and 10 points from Michelle Crouch and five digs and five points from Tegan Bays.

Hannah Walker had three aces for the JV team.

Meagan Kelley and Alex Bailey each had a block and a kill.

 

Bridgman Invitational

The Niles freshmen volleyball team finished second at the Bridgman Invitational Friday.

The Vikings defeated host Bridgman (25-13, 25-11), Saugatuck (25-12, 29-27) and Edwardsburg (25-17, 25-18) to reach the finals.

Lake Michigan Catholic won the championship with a 19-25, 29-27 and 25-12 win over Niles.

“The girls did a great job for just having a week of practice,” Niles coach Samantha Schaller said, “and did an excellent job at executing their defense with just learning it the day before.”

Coloma Early Bird

The Niles JV volleyball team went 2-2 at the Coloma Early Bird Tournament Friday.

The Vikings defeated Dowagiac (25-6, 25-23) and Watervliet (25-22, 25-14), but lost to Mattawan (25-19, 25-23) and Lakeshore (20-25, 25-17, 25-9).

Elyse Zimmerman and McKenna Bybee each had 15 kills for Niles, which also got 25 assists from Antonia Palmer.

Holly Walker had eight aces and Meagan Kelley two blocks.
