Fernwood installs board members

Fernwood Botanical Garden in Niles recently installed five new members to its board of directors. New members include Barbara Craig, of St. Joseph, Alton Harris, of Chicago, Ann Hildner, of Indianapolis, Brian Ortiz, of Chicago, and Krista Parin, of Buchanan.

Craig is executive dean for Lake Michigan College’s Bertrand Crossing Campus. Craig is a graduate of the University of London and Western Michigan University. She has held several positions at Lake Michigan College in her 17-year tenure, serving for the past seven years in the Niles-Buchanan area. She became executive dean of in 2009. She was recently named Woman of the Year by the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce. She lives in St. Joseph with her husband, Marty, and 7-year-old daughter, Beatrice.

Harris is a founding partner of the Chicago law firm of Ungaretti & Harris. A specialist in securities law, Harris is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Law School. He is past chairman of the board of trustees of Columbia College and is currently chairman of the board of the Illinois Humanities Council. He has homes in Chicago and Galien.

Hildner is assistant professor of architecture, horticulture and landscape architecture department at Purdue University. Hildner received a degree in art history from Washington University and a master of landscape architecture from Ball State University.

Ortiz has been a Chicago optometrist for 20 years and is a master gardener. He is a graduate of West Virginia University and the Illinois College of Optometry. He has homes in Oak Park, Ill., and Union Pier.

Parin earned a degree in marketing from the University of Illinois in 2004, and works as an account executive for Proctor and Gamble. Parin and her husband, Adam, are restoring their home on Front Street in Buchanan, where they live with their 17-month-old son, Henry.
