A Dowagiac woman was airlifted to the hospital of a Wednesday morning crash on M-51 in which one driver left the scene and remains unidentified.

Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports deputies handled a personal injury accident on M-51, just south of Corwin Street in Silver Creek Township, Cass County, at 11:33 a.m.

Yusuf Mohamud, 41, from Minnesota, was traveling north on M-51 when he struck a vehicle that was traveling south.

The driver of the second vehicle, identified as Nicole Sanson, 32, from Dowagiac, was traveling south on M-51 when she swerved to miss a vehicle that was attempting to pass the semi driven by Mohamud.

Sanson initially ran off the roadway right to avoid the passing vehicle, attempted to get back on the roadway when she over-corrected and proceeded in front of the semi, which then struck her.

Sanson was transported to Borgess Lee Memorial for her injuries and then airlifted to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Witnesses state that the vehicle attempting to pass the semi was a red passenger car driven by a white male. The vehicle left the scene of the accident and remains unidentified.

Sanson was not wearing a seatbelt. Mohamud was wearing his seatbelt.

Wayne Township Fire and Pride Care Ambulance assisted deputies at the scene.
