Niles Parks and Recreation Board put finishing touches Tuesday evening on the recommendation it sends to City Council Aug. 13 for $20,000 worth of improvements to Cable Street Park in Third Ward from 2011 Community Development Block Grant funds.

The city receives CDBG funding from the federal government based on its poverty level and aging housing stock.

The parks board, meeting at Niles District Library, selected from three proposals a concept submitted by GameTime, which also designed Plym and Cass Street parks.

Public Works Director Joe Ray said the bid includes “recoating” an existing swing set and climber and the addition of a new play structure that includes a slide. Old rocking horses will be removed.

Each of the three features will be bordered with chips contained by timbers.

“It could be constructed at the end of September,” Ray said.
